Seems like just yesterday the sun was taking over indicating the end of the hockey season, but the temperature has fallen as much as the stock market and it’s time to drop the puck again. Lots of changes this year and perhaps a changing of the guard at the top as many clubs made off season moves we look forward to a competitive year from start to finish but as always we have our favorites. Here are the Smacchat Power Rankings to start the year.
1 Red Wings: Their banner raising home opener was a dud, but the Red Wings snapped back to attention in Ottawa by limiting the Senators to just 22 shots and turning over the puck only four times.
2 Sharks Brian Boucher's shutout in his first outing should make the Sharks feel a little more comfortable about giving Evgeni Nabokov a few extra nights off.
3 Canadiens With four points in his first two games, Alex Tanguay seems to have found a comfort zone quickly with new linemates Saku Koivu and Guillaume Latendresse.
4 Rangers One reason for the Rangers best start in 25 years is the Dubinsky-Zherdev-Voros line. The unit has five goals, 12 points and 32 shots in four games.
5 Devils The goals are still hard to come by, but the Devils have the makings of a team that can produce lots of offensive pressure. New Jersey fired a total of 78 shots in winning its first two starts.
6 Flyers The injuries along the blue line could be a real problem here, particularly if Marty Biron continues to keep the goaltending questions he revived in less than a period of the opener on the front burner.
7 Capitals Ovechkin and company have been flying which means all the offense everyone expected will be there. But it won't mean much if Jose Theodore doesn't raise his game dramatically -- say to the mediocre level.
8 Penguins No goals yet for Crosby while the Pens have managed three points in three games, which is arguably three more than they really deserve.
9 Stars Here's an instant analysis from coach Dave Tippett after his highly touted Stars dropped their first two games. "We've got lots of work to do in all areas."
10 Ducks A couple of ugly efforts for the Ducklings to get things started. Someone should tell them the Stanley Cup hangover is supposed to last only one season.
11 Senators What's the matter with this team without Alfie? Plenty including Martin Gerber, who has looked sharp at times, but has been the goat in both Ottawa losses by allowing weak goals.
12 Oilers Pulling out a big win late in the opener at home was important because the Oilers play 18 of their first 26 games on the road.
13 Canucks Who needs Mats Sundin? The Canucks are saving themselves $10 million a year because the free agent rejected them and are still getting the offense they need with 11 goals in their first two games.
14 Wild - With contract talks apparently going nowhere, look for the Wild to do something -- read trade -- Marian Gaborik sooner rather than later.
15 Bruins - Positive starts for key offensive players like Bergeron, Ryder and Kessel, but not so much for often penalized d-man Zdeno Chara. The captain was a minus-3 in Boston's first two games and in the box for another goal.
16 Sabres - Good sign winning the opener on a shootout after losing nine times that way last season and missing the playoffs by four points.
17 Coyotes - Rookies Mikkel Boedker, Viktor Tikhonov and Kyle Turris are getting to play important minutes right away and Olli Jokinen is paying early dividends for a Phoenix team that could surprise a lot people.
18 Flames - Time to start questioning whether Miikka Kiprusoff is still an elite goalie, but for now the bigger issue in Calgary is the power play which has drawn a blank in 13 tries so far.
19 Hurricanes - Doing things the hard way. The 'Canes fell behind a couple of goals to Florida and three to Tampa Bay, but came back to win both games.
20 Panthers - Imagine what kind of numbers David Booth would put up if he could connect on the power play. Booth has three even strength goals so far after getting 21 of his 22 last season five-on-five.
21 Predators - Great special-team work keyed the Predators home opener win, but the bigger news might have been the sellout crowd at the game.
22 Blackhawks - It's a little early to say the wind is out of the Windy City team's sails, but so far it looks like the Blackhawks have been reading too many of their own press clippings.
23 Blue Jackets - Nice debuts for the kids Derick Brassard and Jakub Voracek. Brassard had goals in each of the Jackets' first two games while Voracek had a goal and an assist.
24 Blues - St. Louis had the league's worst power play last season. Now? Five goals on its first nine tries.
25 Thrashers - The Thrashers look much improved along the blue line at both ends of the ice. Their defensemen have been involved in the scoring play on eight of Atlanta's nine goals so far.
26 Avalanche - Think they're not worried about goalie Peter Budaj? He lost the Avs' first two games despite Colorado holding a combined 72-43 shot advantage.
27 Lightning - What's coach Barry Melrose going to do next? He called out his stars after Tampa Bay dropped both games in Prague and then watched the Bolts blow a 3-0 lead and get outshot 20-2 in the third to lose their home opener.
28 Islanders - While the Isles are staying mum about the reason for Rick DiPietro being on the sidelines, Joey MacDonald is proving to be an adequate backup.
29 Maple Leafs - Some things never change. Toronto's 29th ranked penalty killing unit was victimized four times in the first two games.
30 Kings - There was good news for the future in Los Angeles with Anze Kopitar getting locked up for seven years and the re-signed Patrick O'Sullivan making his debut after holding out through training camp.

While Detroit is better than last year with the edition of Hossa, I think it is too early to just give them the Stanley cup. They are not unbeatable. I could see Dallas or San Jose beating them in a 7-game series not saying necessarily I think that would happen but it is a real possibility. All of these Red WIng fans gloating and gloating about how good their team is just remember the Patriots and I don't care if that was just 1 game they went undefeated. You know the more you annoy people with how good your team is the more people will be out to talk sh** IF they lose.
Ok let me just clear something up real quick. Everyone is talking about how Detroit is a lock to win the cup again because they are the defending champs and have added Hosa.
Although Detroit has great young talent, the backbone of their team is getting old. Hosa does not fit in on this team, hes an egomaniac and the Red Wings are comparable to the Patriots....they have a great system and everyone leaves their ego at home and plays for the good of the team and the win.
And for all you haters....Chris Osgood is top 3 golie in the league right now, and they should have been starting him everygame for last half decade.
Now you want to talk about adding talent....what about the Stars who will get to play with Brad Richards from training camp. I realy think they can challenge the Wings for the President Trophy. Solid goaltending, solid defensemen (especialy for PP), and they have serious scoring threats.
Now you penguins fans:
Not only did you lose half your team, but your top line doesnt work. Malkin is way better than Crosby, and Crosby is a whiny little $*%&#. Hes got no heart, he doesnt like to take the punishment, and 70% of the time he makes a blind pass to a spot in the ice hopeing someone will be there, and the 5% of the time that someone actualy is, everyone thinks hes got eyes in the back of his head.
Penguins PK is going to suck, they WONT be committed to defence like they were last year (after losing key role players to FA). Mike Richards > Crosby.
the rangers havent figured out its about building a team? except they have dubinsky dawes callahan prucha staal girardi lundqvist korpikoski who are all homegrown, 8 of 20 guys... and the rangers want to win, so when key parts of the team r gone like jagr straka shanahan and avery, you have to make up for them somehow, the moves they made are not reminiscent of what they did in the late 90s early 00's (ex: bobby holik eric lindros theo fleury tom poti etc.).. in the last 3-4 years they have put themselves in a position to compete and be a playoff team every year... and i expect no different this year... and redden and naslund are nowhere near "Done" .. Redden doesnt even have to carry the defense, he just has to contribute, with rozsival girardi and staal to help provide offense.. same with naslund, there are 7-8 forwards on the rangers who can provide scoring, its not like hes on vancouver with the 2 sedins where they have to provide all the offense, plus that team played a completely defensive system last few years factoring into his stats... and zherdev is 23 YRS OLD and ready to blossom with actual talent aroudn him, the 4th best scorer on columbus was MANNY MALHOLTRA, after zherdev and nash they had nothing.. keep hating on the rangers i love it but we will see whats good at the end of march when 82 gms have been played
The Rangers have gottin younger and way faster, they have improved on defence, and they still have King Henrik who I believe is the top goalie in the game right now but for some reason, Brodeur keeps winning Vezina awards its stupid. The Ranger got the team to make a run, the only team that has me worried in the east is the Penguins but they won't have they're 2 best d-men until late november so if the Rangers can get off to a quick start, I think they can build a little breathing room on PIT and build a positive team attitude
I love how people question Chris Osgoods abilities as a goal tender saying the redwings chances of repeating hinge on if he can tend good goal, news flash he is fifteenth in career wins, twenty third in career shutouts, and two cups to his title, says those stats with out a name attatched and people will say HOF cantidate, attatch Chris Osgood to those stats and they question if he is HOF material. Wings goal tending is solid, look out NHL, stanley is staying home this year.
im just sick and tried of espn and people cutting up on teams , just play the game and call it good, yes im detroit fan , my neighbor one of the old redwings, i tired of seeing the east get talk about more then the west, all i here is ranger and mont, and so on , and also hearing about sid , if he so great where his cup , and act like no captain like great , sid showed poor sportmanship agaisnt detroit , i useto like the kid , but i change my mind . humble people make great captains like jeter or jerome ingal from cal though are class acts and zeterberg, and joe sakic are good sportman of hockey not the sid
I hope the Penguins fix their PP. 1-14 in 2 games is horrible. Although I will say that when the Penguins play the Flyers and if they lose they can't complain that Gonchar and Whitney are out because then they will be hypocrites(Coburn and Timonen being out for playoffs). I hope they can overcome them being out though. I really hope they play Goligoski more on the PP.
The Sharks are notorious for choking in the playoffs. And if the Sharks and Wings met in the playoffs, don't you think Babcock would have a huge advantage in coaching against his former wingman in Todd McClellan?"
i don't think McClellan having been the asst coach in Detroit puts the Sharks at a disadvantage, if anything, it puts Detroit at a disadvantage because McClellan knows the Detroit system so well. He has instituted a new system for the sharks, which will hopefully use their size to more of an advantage.
The Sharks are dangerous because they are one of the fastest teams in the league (although Detroit is one of the few teams faster) and one of the biggest teams. If they lived up to their full potential (which they've never done in the playoffs) they can skate by the slower teams, and beat up on the speedier teams. i'm looking forward to getting my first look at the new system this thursday, and another good season this year.
Go Sharks
