As recently a month ago it looked like most of the races in the NHL were all but decided but coming to the close of February things have gotten much tighter for everyone (especially in the East) outside of the city of Boston. The Bruins are playing Warden supervising the fray in the yard as the other inmates fight for both seeding and survival. There is a little gap between the 8 and 9 but the margin between hosting a first round game and an all expense trip to Boston and a first round exit is razor thin as seeds 4-8 all have 66 points but the Rangers (2-6-2 last 10) are heading in the wrong direction and one more loss may cause a coaching change. On the outside looking in are the defending Eastern Conf. champions who need a serious run to get into the picture, and the Hurricanes who missed a chance to move up by getting blown out by the Bruins in their last meeting. In the Western Conference that “insurmountable” Sharks lead is down to three points over the hard charging Red Winds. Hard to believe the team that was as close to ‘unbeatable’ at home as there has been in recent history m may let home ice slip away (4-2-4 last 10). Calgary and Chi Town are notted at 72 to round out the first round home ice, after that, from 5 thru 10, a cold streak can send you to an early vacation. Even the LA Kings, who have not seen late spring hockey since the Regan administration find themselves 5 points out of the last playoff spot with the young guns playing well. Who will fade down the stretch? Who are the pretenders and contenders? Let us know here and in the NHL chat rooms.

I'll be rooting for the Wings out west in this years playoffs. I really want Hossa to get his cup...he deserves it as a world class player. I felt bad for him last year after coming so close and being the best penguin on the ice. He really did a lot for us last year so in return I really hope he gets it this year.
it's a bit of a dilemma for the Wings. They brought him in to win a cup and he came to win a cup. I feel that it is going to happen, but if it does he gets what he came there for and now with that monkey off his back can feel free to take the big money. If it doesn't happen he stays for a hell of a discount.
with all due respect to Boston and New Jersey, there is no weakness in any of the Florida 6, while there are in Bostons' and New Jersey's.... Florida just has the best depth as well as 2 top shelf defensemen whereas Boston and New Jersey dont.
.the Panther blueline is the deepest in the East as far as Im concerned..."
I'd put them at #3 at best behind these two...
Bruins :
Chara-Ward
Ference-Wideman
Stuart-Hnidy
Thomas
Fernandez
Devils:
Oduya-Martin
White-Salvador
Mottau-Greene
Clemmer
Weekes
(Brodeur)
This is what my crystal ball tells me about the Panthers' future:
VS CHI - WIN
VS BOS - LOSS
AT BOS - WIN
AT NY RANGERS - WIN
AT NEW JERSEY - LOSS
AT WASHINGTON - WIN
Bruins are doing better, getting 2 PPG breaking out of a 2 for 32 PP slump was nice, but they still have some work to do to get back to their early season form... They allowed the 1st goal in the game again, Ward still concerns me, he got burned badly a few times, he is still playing hurt. Kessel is still getting too fancy in front of the net and getting denied, Kobasew needs to get his act together...on the positive side, Krecji continues to dominate, Wheeler is getting back to where he was and Bergeron is working his tail off and doing all the right things physically and technically that don't always show up in the stat sheet. Thomas was solid with 31 saves, no issues there. Let's face it though, the Canes self destructed in the 3rd and the Panthers are more solid then that. Bruins have a tough home and home that they should split, the lightning and ducks they should beat, and the Caps in Boston that will be close and fantastic (toss-up)
